Loyola University New Orleans has significantly contributed to the professionalization of criminal justice personnel in the New Orleans metropolitan area, in the state and in the nation. Loyola University New Orleans began its Criminal Justice Degree Program in 1960. Since that time, the program has graduated over 1,000 students with Bachelor of Criminal Justice (BCJ) degrees. Many of these individuals are now employed in both private and public organizations, including federal governmental agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), U.S. Border Patrol, Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), U.S. Marshall’s Office, U.S. Customs, U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and in numerous state and local criminal justice agencies. About twenty-three percent of our undergraduate majors have also gone on to receive advanced degrees (Master, Doctorate, JD).

Over the years Loyola’s Bachelor of Criminal Justice degree program has provided a solid foundation for students seeking either advanced degrees or employment in today’s rapidly growing field of criminal justice. As a result, Loyola University has acquired a reputation for excellence in the field of higher education in criminology. Our program exceeds the Minimum Standards For Criminal Justice Education as set forth in Guidelines for College and University-Level Programs by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. The emphasis on values and ethics and the solid liberal arts grounding of the common curriculum along with a strong criminal justice curriculum including theoretical as well as applied courses has distinguished the Loyola program.

An advanced degree is now a necessity for most careers in criminal justice, both in the public and private sectors. If you have a major or minor in the social sciences, liberal arts or criminal justice and are contemplating a career in criminal justice, we suggest that you examine the Master of Criminal Justice degree offered at Loyola University New Orleans. While the program is geared toward career enhancement of professionals already working in the field, openings for highly qualified individuals desiring to enter the profession are available. Such individuals will be taking classes with other students who are in career tracks ranging from federal law enforcement to corporate security. In addition to obtaining a solid foundation in both theoretical and applied knowledge, the opportunity to work with professionals in a classroom setting will provide an invaluable experience not usually obtained in more traditional types of graduate programs.
